1.Navagraha Mandir
- It is dedicated to the nine planets, attracts large crowds on new moon days falling on Saturdays.
- Situated on the banks Triveni Ghat of the popular Shipra river.
- The temple is located away from the old site of Ujjaini town.

2.Bhartrihari Caves
- Century old Caves
- These caves as estimated to be 2500 years old and is dedicated to Raja Bhartrihari who was the elder brother of King Vikramaditya.
- He was spiritually motivated and left the kingdom behind for his brother Vikramaditya and joined the Nath Sect.
- He did his Tapasya in this very cave and it is believed that it consists a secret path that opens to char dham.
- This place is amazing there is two caves where bhartrihari maharaj pray several years.
3.Siddhavat
- The holy place for hindu pilgrim is Siddhavat of Ujjain, it is located near river Shipra.
- This place is also famous for absolution of kalsarpyog as a belief by local people of ujjain.
- Siddhavat, banyan tree on banks of river Shipra is worshipped in form of temple.
- It has the same religious sanctity as Akshayavat in Prayag and Gaya, Vanshivat of Vrindavan and Panchavata of Nasik.
- According to Skanda Purana Paravati performed penance and planted this tree. Shiv and Parvati’s son Kartikeya is believed to have killed demon Tarakasur under this tree.
- This story finds place in Kalidas’s celebrated work Kumarasambhava. King Vikramaditya is supposed to have meditated here for magical powers to control the ghost (Betaal).
- King Ashoka’s son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra embarked on journey to spread Buddhism after offering their prayers here.
- Other than the temple at Nasik, this is the only temple in the country where special puja is done for those who have Kal sarp dosh
4.Char Dham Mandir
- In this temple ldlos were installed in the presence of Swami Parmanandji Maharaj and Swami Shanti Swaroopannandji Maharaj on 14th February, 1967
- Char Dham temple is situated at a slight distance towards South side of Shri Harsiddhi Mata temple.
- Too much attractive statues are instelled inside this temple. Dhams at one place. Here Swamijis residence and devotion room is also situated.
- Char Dham Mandir AARTI
Aarti begins at 7-8a.m.and 6-7 p.m.if we were to offer our own puja (prayer) separately, we’d have to do it after the aarti and we might spend a couple of hours waiting.
5.Kalidasa academy
- The Kalidasa Academy was established in Ujjain by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in memory of the renowned poet and dramatist, Kalidasa.
- This academy emphasises the study and research of Sanskrit.
- The premises of the academy consist of a museum, theatre, library, seminar and lecture halls, research facilities for scholars and a large open-air theater.
6.Patal Bhairav Temple
- Devoted to the Goddess of power Patal Bhairav, this astonishing temple has a legendary story behind it.
- As per the Hindu Mythology, a selfish demon, Bhairav Nath chased a young girl Vaishno Devi, who was the embodiment of Mother Goddess.
- On being discovered by Bhairav, Devi took the form of Mahakal, and killed the demon. During his last breath Bhairav pleaded for forgiveness.
- Devi granted him Moksha, and also gave the boon that every devotee has to visit the temple of Bhairav Nath near the holy cave, after the Darshan of the goddess, in order to complete their pilgrimage.
7.Triveni Ghat Sri Saneeshwara Navagraha Temple
- It is located close to the Shani Navgraha temple. It is the confluence of three rivers- Shipra, Gandaki and Saraswati.
- The ghats here are not so well maintained and the sangam is usually dirty.
- But it is a nice serene spot with old banyan trees.
- It is peaceful to sit under these old trees and enjoy the cool breeze here.

8.Ankapata
- After Krishna killed his evil uncle Kasna, his parents Vasudev and Devaki sent him and his brother Balram to Guru Sandipani for their studies.
- According to Bhagwat Purana Krishna, Balram and Sudama were taught by Kalaguru Sandipani at his ashram here.
- Even today parents do patti puja here in which the writing tablet is worshipped before child starts going to school.
The Kundeshwar Mahadev temple nearby is the only temple in India to have standing bull Nandi. The Nandi dates back to the Sunga period. Guru Sandipani is believed to have meditated at the Sarweshwar Mahadev temple nearby.
9.Vikram Kirti Mandir Museum
- The archaeological museum here exhibits a variety of pottery, copper utensils and fossils that have been discovered from Narmada valley.
- It was established in 1965 on the occasion of the second millennium of the Vikram era
- The Vishnu gallery has the finest collection of Vishnu sculptures in the country. The museum also has an impressive collection of sculptures from the Parmar and Partihar period.
10.Ranmukteshwar Temple
- Situated on the banks of Shipra, the temple is built under a banyan tree, more than hundred years old.
- The garbha griha enshrines Shiv ling within the trunk of the tree. Outside the temple is the idol of Virbhadra.
- It is said that King Harsihchandra was freed from his debt to Rishi Vishwamitra after he prayed to Shiv under this tree.
11.Vikrant Bhairav Shrine
- Located near the Harsiddhi Mata temple.
- it is a relatively new temple dedicated to king Vikramaditya and the nine gems of his court- Kalidas, Amaranth, Shapanak, Dhanvantri, Varruchi, Varahmihir, Ghatakpar, Shanku and Vetalbhadra.
12. Pir Matsyendranath
- Matsyendranath, the founder of Nath cult and Guru of Gorakshnath took samadhi at this place on the outskirts of Ujjain.
- The samadhi is decorated with flowers.
- A must visit for mythology, legends lovers and also who believe in beliefs / faith and look forward to positives, life has to offer.
- Its believed that he mastered 84 mahasiddhis (supernatural powers).
Very serene and calm place, hardly a visitor except a couple of Nath yogis who stay nearby. - Muslims also revere the saint and hence also known as Pir Matsyendranath.
- It's on the same tour circuit as Bhatrihari caves and Garhkalika mandir.
13. Kalideh Palace
- This is one of the famous attraction for tourists coming to Ujjain.
- This is located right on the bank of Shipra River and has good photography spots.
- Though this is a ruined palace it is sparkling and attractive.
- It is an old palace, may be more than 500 years old of Muslim era, was also renovated by Scindias.
- It is away form the main city of Ujjain, located in a serene place.
- It has a main structure with beautiful carvings, domes and gates, a nice architectural marvel.
- There is a pond surrounded by small structures with domes and gates.
- It has an ancient Sun Temple within.
14. Nagarkot Ki Rani Temple
- Nagarkot ki Rani Temple is another landmark temple and ponds around, special lighting in navratri festival
- Nagarkot Ki Rani is the guardian deity of the south-west corner of the city.
- The temple is believed to have been established by Vikramaditya.
- Behind the temple is Govardhan sagar, one of the seven sacred lakes of Ujjain.
15.Bhukhi Mata Temple
इस मंदिर से राजा विक्रमादित्य के राजा बनने की किंवदंती जुड़ी हुई है। मान्यता है कि भूखी माता को प्रतिदिन एक युवक की बलि दी जाती थी। तब जवान लड़के को उज्जैन का राजा घोषित किया जाता था, उसके बाद भूखी माता उसे खा जाती थी। एक दुखी मां का विलाप देख नौजवान विक्रमादित्य ने उसे वचन दिया कि उसके बेटे की जगह वह नगर का राजा और भूखी माता का भोग बनेगा।
- राजा बनते ही विक्रमादित्य ने पूरे शहर को सुगंधित भोजन से सजाने का आदेश दिया। जगह-जगह छप्पन भोज सजा दिए गए। भूखी माता की भूख विक्रमादित्य को अपना आहार बनाने से पहले ही खत्म हो गई और उन्होंने विक्रमादित्य को प्रजापालक चक्रवर्ती सम्राट होने का आशीर्वाद दिया। तब विक्रमादित्य ने उनके सम्मान में इस मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया।
यहां के पुजारी अमरसिंह पिता बंसीलाल मालवीय ने कहा कि कई माताओं में से एक नरबलि की शौकिन थी। राजा विक्रमादित्य ने इस समस्या के निदान के लिए देवी को वचन में लेकर नदी पार उनके मंदिर की स्थापना की। वचन में उन्होंने सभी देवी शक्तियों को भोजन के लिए आमंत्रित किया। कई तरह के पकवान और मिष्ठान बनाकर विक्रमादित्य ने एक भोजशाला में सजाकर रखवा दिए। तब एक तखत पर एक मेवा-मिष्ठान्न का मानव पुतला बनाकर लेटा दिया और खुद तखत के नीचे छिप गए।
रात्रि में सभी देवियां उनके उस भोजन से खुश और तृप्त हो गईं। देवियां आपस में बातें करने लगीं कि यह राजा ऐसे ही हमें आमंत्रित करता रहा तो अच्छा रहेगा। जब सभी जाने लगीं तब एक देवी को जिज्ञासा हुई कि तखत पर कौन-सी चीज है जिसे छिपाकर रखा गया है।
अन्य देवियों ने कहा कि जाने दो, कुछ भी हो हमें क्या, हम तो तृप्त हो गए हैं चलते हैं, लेकिन वह देवी नहीं मानी और तखत पर रखे उस पुतले को तोड़कर खा लिया। खुश होकर देवी ने कहा- किसने रखा यह इतना स्वादिष्ट भोजन। तब विक्रमादित्य तखत के नीचे से निकलकर सामने आ गए और उन्होंने कहा कि मैंने रखा है।
देवी ने कहा कि- मांग लो वचन, क्या मांगना है। विक्रमादित्य ने कहा कि- माता से मैं यह वचन मांगता हूं कि कृपा करके आप नदी के उस पार ही विराजमान रहें, कभी नगर में न आएं। देवी ने राजा की चतुराई पर अचरज जाहिर किया और कहा कि ठीक है, तुम्हारे वचन का पालन होगा। सभी अन्य देवियों ने इस घटना पर उक्त देवी का नाम भूखी माता रख दिया।

यह है उज्जैन नगर में प्रवेश करने का प्राचीन द्वार। पहले इसके आसपास परकोटा या नगर दीवाल हुआ करती थी। अब वे सभी लुप्त हो गई हैं, सिर्फ प्रवेश द्वार और उसका मंदिर ही बचा है।
अमृतलाल पुजारी ने कहा कि यहां पर दो देवियां विराजमान हैं- एक महामाया और महानाया। इसके अलावा विराजमान हैं बत्तीस पुतलियां। यहां पर रोज एक राजा बनता था और उससे ये प्रश्न पूछती थीं। राजा इतना घबरा जाता था कि डर के मारे मर जाता था।
जब राजा विक्रमादित्य का नंबर आया तो उन्होंने अष्टमी के दिन नगर पूजा चढ़ाई। नगर पूजा में राजा को वरदान मिला था कि बत्तीस पुतली जब तुमसे जवाब मांगेंगी तो तुम उन्हें जवाब दे पाओगे। जब राजा ने सभी पुतलियों को जवाब दे दिया तो पुतलियों ने भी वरदान दिया कि राजा जब भी तू न्याय करेगा तब तेरा न्याय डिगने नहीं दिया जाएगा।

1.Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple
- Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, shrines which are said to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.
- The place Ujjain is divine in itself; its old name is ‘Avantika’.
- This is the abode place of Lord Shiva, one of biggest Jyotirlinga in amongst 12 Shiva-Jyotirlinga in India, Lord Shiva also known as the god of destruction.
- It is mentioned in many Hindu epics that, Lord Shiva had killed a demon here named ‘Tripur’. In every 12 years, the biggest Religious fair of Hindus, ‘The Kumba’ being held here.
- Millions of devotees come here to be a part of this holistic ceremony & consider themselves, very fortunate after having bath in Shipra River & a divine darshan of Lord Mahakaleshwar Shiva-Lingam.
THE TEMPLE
- The sprawling temple is situated on the side of the Rudra Sagara Lake; this is a three storied temple, where is Mahakaleshwar Lingam installed at the beneath part, while Nagachandresvara installed at the uppermost part of the temple.
- One can only see Nagachandresvara at the festival time of Nag Panchmi. In the inner and outer walls there are various sculptures have been carved during the Parmar period.
- At the east side of the temple where is a large veranda, adjoining the way which lead to the ‘Garbhgraha’ (Sanctum).
- At the northern side there is Images of Lord Rama, Goddess Avantika. at the southern side of the temple, where is many small temples, built during the rein of Shinde.
- A lofty Kunda named Koti Tirtha is built in the sarvatobhadra style, which is situated in the temple complex.The massive spire of the temple is soaring into the sky; the architecture of the outer side of the temple is so fascinating, which depicts north-Indian style.
TEMPLE HISTORY
- It is hard to say on what time Mahakaleshwar Temple came in existence, though certainly there are evidence which articulates its archaic values.
- Famous King Ashoka’s Generals and top commanding officers were living here, those days the perception here of Buddha religion was on the pace.
- Ujjain happened to be the capital of Great Maharaja Vikramaditya, he was very kind and brave King. Gupt dynasties came after Vikramaditya, and India parted in many regions after Gupt departed, Parmars ruled over Ujjain between 9th to 10th centuries, later they left for Dhar.
- In 1235 AD, Altamus, then the ruler of Delhi, seized Ujjain, since then Muslims ruled over Ujjain for over 500 years. In 1750 AD, Sindhiyas, occupied Ujjain, and then British came in rule.

If visitor is looking for luxury option then it will be better to look for hotel in Indore city(65kms) and visit temple as excursion tour.
- NEXT TO MAHAKAL TEMPLE
- Indore:Indore is the largest metro city of Madhya Pradesh in Central India. It happened to be the administrative capital of Holkar dynasties, situated 55 km down-south to the Ujjain. - Bagh Caves:These caves are made out of rock dove, and used as the residence and for the meditation by the buddhist monks. These caves have the paintings which are corresponded with the Ajanta caves situated in Aurangabad, about 180 km from Ujjain.
- Bhopal: It is capital city of Madhya Pradesh state, about 180kms east of Ujjain town. 2.Harsiddhi Temple
- Ujjain situated splendid Shri Harsiddhi Temple is one of the ancient places of India and it is the 13th Shaktipeeth among the 51 Shaktipeeths of Mata Sati.
- According to the mythological references once Dakshraj, father of Mata Sati, organized a Yajna (Yagya in Sanskrit) where he invited all the Devis and Devas (Gods) but he didn’t invite Mata Sati and lord Shiva.
- Still Mata Sati attended that yajna. There Mata Sati saw that Dakshraj was insulting his husband lord Shiva.
- Seeing this she got angry and jumped into the Agnikund (Hearth).
- Knowing this lord Shiva became irate and started touring the whole world with the body of Mata Sati.
- Seeing lord Shiva in such condition the whole world surrounded with chaos. In a distraught state, devas approached lord Vishnu and began praying to remove this adversity.
- Then for disillusioning of lord Shiva with the body of Mata Sati, lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra (a spinning disc like weapon).
- The chakra caused Mata Sati’s body to be fragmented. Among them, 13th fragment in the form of elbow of Mata Sati fell down at this place of Ujjain.
- Since then Maa Harsiddhi enshrined here in the form of a temple.
- From the pages of history it is revealed that Maa Harsiddhi devi was the deity, the supreme being of Samrat Vikramaditya and known by the name ‘Mangalchandiki’ in ancient time.
- King Vikramaditya used to worship devi Harsiddhi and dedicated his head around eleven times in the feet of Maa Harsiddhi but the divine mother again brought him to life.
- This king Vikramaditya was the emperor of Ujjain who was known for his intellect, valour and nobleness. Vikram Samvat calendar is started by the name of this Raja Vikramaditya.
- Shri Harsiddhi temple is situated in between Mahakal in the east and Ramghat in the west.
- Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth of Ujjain which is congregated with devotees all year round is a big source of energy and power.
- This place is of special significance for Tantra performers and Yogis that is also mentioned in the spiritual and mythological history of Ujjain.The festival of Navratri is celebrated here with great splendour and belief.
- Many lamps and candles (Diyas) are flamed which create a tremendous and divine scene. Maa Harsiddhi fulfills the desires of all those devotees and pilgrims who come into the temple with full faith and paid their deep obeisance to the divine mother.
- In front of the Garbhgriha (Adytum) of Harsiddhi temple in assemblage hall there is a ‘Shree Yantra’.
- It is said that it’s a divine Shree Yantra and merely by its Darshan one can get the virtues. In the holy premises of the temple there is also a temple of lord Shiva namely Karkotkeshvar Mahadev which is one among the Chourasi Mahadevas and where it is the belief of people that Kalsarp Dosha is eliminated here.
- In the centre of the temple premises two seamless flames keep illuminating whose Darshan are pleasurable for the devotees.
- In all the four directions of the temple premises there are four entry gates and inside the main entry gate in front of the Harsiddhi assemblage hall there are two pillars adorned with lamps that display their brilliance after being lit.
- Hundreds of lamps burning simultaneously create an environment of unexplained splendour, especially on Navratri, the nine day festival celebrated in the month of October /November dedicated to Goddess Durga.
- These pillars are the unique feature of this temple which belongs to the era of Maratha. According to the astrologists, the temple has been nominated as Shaktipeeth.
- This nomination is – Name of place is Ujjain, name of Shakti is Mangalchandiki and name of Bhairav is Kapilambar.
- In the centre of this ancient temple there is a holy stone which is covered with the layers of turmeric and vermillion and it is the center of belief for many people.
- Harsiddhi Mandir is situated at Harsiddhi marg near Mahakal temple.
3.Mangalnath Temple
About Shri Mangalnath Mandir
Mangalnath temple is a famous hindu temple dedicated to Lord shiva.- This is the birth place of lord mangalnath(Planet mars).This temple is surrounded by a vast stech of water in the majestic shirpa river.
- The temple is situated at the place where the first meridian is said to pass the earth and so this place was a renowned spot for a clear view of the planet and consequently it turned to be an apt place for astronomical studies.
- The specialty of this Indian temple is that all those natives who have Mangal/Mars in the Karka rasi which causes debilitation should do Pooja here as Pooja removes hurdles for them and grants them boons.
- His presence in the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh house from lagna in an individual’s birth chart is considered to give favourable results, while the presence in the first, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth and twelfth house is said to yield unfavourable results.
- His influence generates virtues of courage, heroism, anger, warring tendency, joyousness, knowledge of sense, and dominance in an individual.
- Such people are soldiers, doctors, sportsmen, mechanics. The colour associated with Mangal is red, metal-copper, gem-red coral and element-fire.

4.Kal Bhairav Temple
- Kal Bhairav Temple is a Hindu temple located off Ujjain city at the outskirts on bank of River Shipra in Madhya Pradesh. Divine diety Kal Bhairav, is considered a form of Lord Shiva, and also Guardian (Kotwaal) of the city and Commander-in-Chief or Chief General (Senapati) of the town.
- A unique things about this temple is that alcohol offering made to the lord. Liquor is offered as one of the five tantric ritual offerings known as "p Panchamakara: madhya (alcohol), maansa (meat), meen (fish), mudra (gesture or parched grain) and maithuna (sexual intercourse). In older times, all five offerings were made to the deity, but now only alcohol is offered; the other four offerings are in form of symbolic rituals.
- It's a small temple with a wooden pillar in the centre which is used to lit up diyas (light lamps) after sunset. There is another small Dattatreya Temple inside the complex.
- There is a footwear collection booth outside at the entrance. There is a large size free vehicle parking area outside.
- All around parking, vendors sell baskets of offerings, containing coconuts, flowers and liquor bottles.
- There are govt. liquor shops to ensure that the devotees are not swindled by unlicensed vendors of alcohol.
- Please endure that you take your alcohol bottle back after the priest has offered a little to the lord from your bottle.
- The interesting part regarding to the temple, every day hundreds litres of liquors served to lips of God which has slit there, but no one knows where liquors are going on, and nowhere is wet despite of huge amount of liquid.
- Local people told that a few times scientific researches were made, but nothing found.

6.Sandipani Ashram
- As per Indian Mythology, Lord Krishna came to Ujjain (then known as Ujjayini) in his childhood for his education and studied in this very Ashram.
- Rishi Sandipani was his Guru and this is the place where he met his friend Sudama. Here you will see a statue of standing Nandi (perhaps the only standing Nandi in the world).
- It is said that when Lord Krishna came to Ujjain for his studies, Lord Shiva as Mahakaal and king of Ujjayini visited him in Sandipani Ashram to pay his respects.
- Since two Lords were meeting, the Nandi could not sit and hence the idol of Nandi is in standing pose. This sure is a not to be missed place.
- There is a 4000 year old Jyotirlinga here, a floating stone from Lord Rama's time and the place where Shri Krishna met Sudama. Commercialised, but still a beautiful place.
- The temple tell the story of the way how that period education system was.
7.ISKCON Temple
- The ISCKON temple in Ujjain is truly beautiful.
- The idols are so beautiful that one cannot stop take off the eyes from them.
- The temple is run by the Hare Rama Hare Krishna Trust and their bhajans are famous.
- A separate complex is built adjacent to the temple offering accommodations for those who travel from outside.
- The temple administration also runs a restaurant named Govinda offering delicious vegetarian food.
- The morning and evening Puja and Aarti are a treat to watch with all the Bhajans, Slokas and chanting. It is a divine feeling.
- The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement, was founded in 1966 by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
- ISKCON is a worldwide association of devotees of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead; its members consist of 10,000 temple devotees and 250,000 congregational devotees.
- Over four decades ISKCON has grown to comprise of over 350 temples, 60 rural communities, 50 schools and 60 restaurants.
- One of the main objectives of ISKCON is to promote the wellbeing of society by teaching the science of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad-Gita and other timeless Vedic scriptures.

8.Ram Mandir Ghat
- Ram ghat is on the bank of triveni river and a very much divine and peaceful place to visit. Evening is a best time to visit the place and one must attend the evening aarti here.
- This is a place where a festival called KUMBH MELA is held every 12 years like many such melas in India.
- This is on the Kshipra river where the water is fed from Narmada river through pipiline.The water is stagnant and non flowing ,hence hygeinically not suitable for dip bath or drinking.
- However,devotees do it out of their Shraddha.Many small temples present here.This is a place where Lord Ram rested here with Sita mata and brother Laxman on the way back to Ayodhya from Lanka after a war.A must place to visit.
- However,cleanliness and proper maintenance by local authorities is desirable.
- An evening visit is recommended. This is 10 mins walk from Harsiddhi temple. The number of temples on this ghat is just amazing.
9.Bade Ganesh jii Ka Mandir
- One of the favorite temple for locals as well as tourists in Ujjain.
- This is called "bade Ganesh" because of the murti of lord ganesha is around 10 o 12 feet big.
- Small yet attractive place. It is located right on the way to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlings Temple.
10.Gopal Mandir Temple
- Located near to the Mahakaleswar temple , Gopal temple was built in 19 Century by a queen of Scindia dynasty .
- Lots of history associated with this temple . Architecture is brilliant with the stories of Sri Krishna depicted on the walls through beautiful pics .
- Very tranquil and peaceful place.
- Also about area surrounding temple advantages are when u want to do local street shopping in ujjain... Gopal mandir is the place.. everything is nearby.. sarafa i.e. all well known jwellery shops, utensil shops, grocery items are available, etc.
- All place are nearby to gopal mandir,.. Its a krishna temple... idol is situated high so visible from outside also... nice place to roam around and taste the local culture of ujjain...
- The main door entrance believed to have been originally in the somnath temple which was looted by Mohamed of Gazni and later found its way to lahore from where the Scindias brought it back to India and installed it here.when we visited nice bhajan was going on.
- This temple is built by bayaji shinde. This temple architecture is simply maratha style.
